(CALIFORNIA, MD) – InSight Mobile Data, Inc., a leading provider of Mobile Resource Management (MRM) tools for companies of all sizes, announced today that its StreetEagle ELD solution running on the Samsung Galaxy TAB E is now certified with the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). This announcement is one of many recent statements by InSight Mobile data regarding FMCSA certification of devices for the new federal mandate for ELD compliance.
The Samsung Galaxy TAB E is an ideal BYOD solution for compliance.
Drivers who need to comply with the FMCSA’s ELD mandate need to use technology that will stand up to the demands of the job at hand. Driver engagement is directly associated with the ease of use and reliability of both software and hardware. For that reason, many ELD providers – including InSight Mobile Data – focus on providing ELD software that runs on purpose-built, ruggedized tablets that meet the needs of the transportation industry.
Today, nearly 75 percent of mobile phone subscribers in the U.S. own smartphones – which means many commercial drivers have experience with consumer-level devices in their homes. But tablets lead the way over smartphones in logistics. Because most employees have smartphones and tablets for personal use and are comfortable with them, a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) solution is compelling for many fleets. And with the large 8” display and Verizon LTE connectivity, the Samsung Galaxy TAB E is the perfect BYOD choice to help fleets improve workflow efficiencies and drive results.
“We think our SE Utility and SE Compliance Tablets are great solutions for meeting the needs of fleets that need to comply with the FMCSA ELD mandate,” said Doug Hawley, InSight COO. “However, a lot of our customers use the Samsung TAB E for other business applications. We needed to develop a high quality solution for fleets that had their own devices, or who wanted to manage the hardware used by drivers themselves. The Samsung Galaxy TAB E is a great choice for that type of implementation.”
The FMCSA certified StreetEagle ELD software running on the Samsung TAB E is identical to the software that runs on the SE Utility and Compliance Tablets from InSight Mobile Data and includes Fuel Management, IFTA data and the ability to add other, customer-sourced business applications. To comply with FMCSA rules, the tablet connects directly to the under-dash hardware that connects to the ECM for collecting, interpreting and populating the HoS and DVIR data.
An “All-In-One” Samsung Galaxy TAB E ruggedized solution
Whether behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler or a different type of heavy-duty vehicle, devices used by drivers need to be durable over the long term. Consumer grade devices like the Samsung Galaxy TAB E may have a competitive (up-front) cost of acquisition, but commercial grade, purpose-built devices have the advantage of having a reduced total cost of ownership over life of the product. And in a recent study conducted by Peerless Research Group (PRG), ruggedness, durability and uptime were the top factors taken into account when assessing devices for use in transportation applications. InSight Mobile Data has addressed these factors by providing a ruggedized docking station and mounting solution designed specifically for the Samsung TAB E.
“Our customers came to us with their Samsung TAB E devices in hand and asked us how they could make them work for ELD,” said Chris Eller, Director of Product Development for InSight. “So our hardware engineers worked with our suppliers to develop a mounting solution that would both ‘ruggedize’ the tablet and make all the connections in the vehicle to the ECM while keeping it charged throughout the business day. Now, we can offer an all-in-one ELD solution even when the customer wants to bring their own Samsung Galaxy TAB E to the party.”
